Carey was 5'10 inches tall when she became a high-end model. Her popularity was with American fashion designers Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren was extremely high. Her father, a distinguished scientist who won the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists' 1979 Scientist of Year award, is a highly respected geologist. Carey has traveled throughout the world as a result his career. Following her graduation from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, she started modeling on the side. The idea caught the attention of an agent at Ford Model Agency New York. She moved to France in 1980 and lived briefly in Paris and Bordeaux prior to deciding to move back in New York to continue with her college education and modeling career. Soon, she was being featured on the cover of Vogue, Glamour, etc. She studied full-time in New York University, obtaining her degree in literature in between assignments as a model. Gradually she became interested in acting and attended the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. In 1986 she began her career in acting with a minor role on the show "Club Paradise" in the film "Club Paradise" with Robin Williams. She spends her free time doing white-water rafting, skiing, wind-surfing and climbing rocks.
